The Indian government has asked WhatsApp to withdraw its controversial privacy policy.

The government cited “serious concerns” about the lack of freedom of choice among Indian users.

The Indian government sent a letter to WhatsApp’s CEO Will Cathcart, in which the government claimed the existence of different treatment for Indian users compared to its European counterpart.

Letter stated:

If this [the new policy] Will it allow better service delivery to users or not, the problem is the impact it has on privacy, data security and user choice

The government appeared upset that the Indians did not have a choice of rejecting the changes made to the privacy policy.

The government emphasized the importance of data protection, data security and freedom of choice.

It should be noted that WhatsApp’s privacy policy in Europe prohibits the disclosure of information for one’s own purposes, while its Indian counterpart does not.
