Telehealth and Prescribing: What Does Your State Enable? – OF DIGITAL INTEREST

The state patchwork of telehealth means that healthcare providers must adhere to a variety of regulations governing what types of care can be provided virtually and what modalities can be used in different care settings.

Our new interactive map explores the standards and requirements doctors and nurses must follow when prescribing uncontrolled substances or ordering tests through a telemedicine encounter in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The main topics covered in the survey include:

  • In which states are asynchronous solutions allowed?
  • What are the government regulations for prescribing if there is no doctor-patient relationship prior to encountering telemedicine?
  • What are the state rules for prescribing audiovisual encounters or audio-only encounters?
  • Under what government regulations can a questionnaire be sufficient to establish a doctor-patient relationship or to advance the nurse-patient relationship in the practice?
